Say Goodbye to Your Double Chin with Kybella!

Say Goodbye to Your Double Chin with Kybella!

If you are in search of a non-surgical solution to virtually eliminate submental fullness, also known as a “double chin,” you’ve come to the right place. Desert Eyesthetics is proud to offer Kybella, a safe and effective injectable that will leave you with a beautifully contoured profile! You’ll love the stunning results!

How Does Submental Fullness Develop?

A double chin, otherwise known as submental fullness, is a common condition that develops when adipose tissue, or fat, collects in a pocket below the chin, known as the submental fat pad. It can affect both women and men and usually results from the natural aging process, genetics, or weight gain. The stubborn exercise and diet-resistant fat often poses a cosmetic concern.

What Is Kybella and How Does It Work?

Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable that virtually eliminates moderate to severe fat below the chin. Its active ingredient is identical to deoxycholic acid, a naturally-produced molecule in the body that helps break down and absorb dietary fat.

When injected, Kybella immediately gets to work. It physically destroys the fat cells in the area, with noticeable results. After treatment, the body clears the destroyed fat cells through its natural metabolic processes. These fat cells are no longer able to accumulate fat, meaning the treatment’s results are permanent!

Are You a Candidate for Kybella?

A candidate for Kybella is typically a woman or man over 18 who wants to eliminate submental fullness without surgery or downtime. Dr. Garcia will evaluate your unique needs to ensure that Kybella is right for you. Make sure you let her know about any previous surgeries, cosmetic treatments, medical conditions, and any medications you take. If you have an infection in the area, you’ll need to have it addressed before a Kybella treatment.

What Is the Kybella Procedure?

During your initial consultation, Dr. Garcia will examine the area around your chin and tailor the treatment to the amount of submental fat and your aesthetic goals. While most of our patients don’t require any anesthetics, you may opt for a numbing cream for your comfort. The treatment involves a series of injections using a fine needle. Kybella works discreetly, contouring the under-chin area and dramatically improving its appearance with minimal to no pain, discomfort, or downtime!

What Are the Expected Treatment Results?

Many individuals report results after just one treatment. However, most see a gradual improvement in the following weeks, with the full, stunning effects apparent after the complete treatment series. Most of our patients enjoy a significant reduction in their submental fullness, with a dramatically improved chin profile and jawline.

After being treated with Kybella, most of our patients report feeling younger, happier, and less conscious about their appearance. Many also said they were no longer bothered about their double chin and felt less overweight.

Keep in mind that the treatment results may vary from individual to individual.

How Many Kybella Treatments Sessions Will You Require?

The number of treatments you require will depend on your unique needs. Most of our patients require 2-4 treatment sessions spaced approximately eight weeks apart. However, you may receive up to six treatment sessions.

After you achieve your desired aesthetic results, you will not need any further treatments. Once the fat cells are destroyed, that double chin will be gone for good!

Eyelid Skin Cancer: Diagnosis and Repair

Eyelid Skin Cancer: Diagnosis and Repair

We, at Desert Eyesthetics, understand that the last thing anyone wants to hear is an eyelid skin cancer diagnosis and are here to support you every step of the way. We are proud to offer outstanding treatment options to repair your eyelids and restore their function and natural appearance. You can always count on Dr. Garcia and her dedicated team for care and services that exceed your expectations!

Eyelid Skin Cancer Overview

Your eyelids are very important. They not only enhance your natural appearance but play a vital role in protecting your eyes and keeping them healthy. They also help keep your eyeballs moist by spreading tears each time you blink.

Healthy skin cells sometimes change and grow uncontrollably, forming masses called tumors. A tumor can be benign, meaning that it can grow but will not spread. A cancerous growth, on the other hand, can spread to other parts of the body, posing a risk to your health. Most skin cancers on the face and eyelids result from excessive sun exposure.

Here are the most common types of eyelid skin cancer:

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma: This is the most common type of eyelid cancer. It usually progresses slowly and rarely spreads to other areas in the body.
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma: This cancer is much less common than basal cell carcinoma, but it is more aggressive and can spread more easily to nearby tissues.
  • Sebaceous Carcinoma: This aggressive type of cancer develops in the oil glands, causing thick or inflamed eyelids.
  • Melanoma: Melanoma is the most serious and aggressive type of skin cancer. It starts in the scattered cells called melanocytes, which are found in the deepest layer of the epidermis. These cells produce melanin, the pigment that gives the skin its color.

It is critical to promptly treat any type of skin cancer, especially the fast-spreading melanomas and sebaceous gland carcinomas.

Eyelid Skin Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment?

The recommended procedure to diagnose eyelid skin cancer is a biopsy. We will remove a sample of the tissue in question for examination under a microscope to determine whether cancer is present and evaluate its extent.

Treating eyelid skin cancer in its earliest stages prevents its spread and offers the best chance for successful outcomes. At times, a biopsy removes the entire tumor, meaning no further treatment is required. Melanoma and sebaceous gland carcinomas usually need a more aggressive treatment protocol to prevent the cancer from spreading.

In most cases, surgical removal of skin cancers is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia. We usually refer you out for a technique known as Mohs surgery for the best results. This precise process involves removing a thin layer of tissue and examining it under a microscope. If cancer cells are present, another thin layer of tissue will be removed. The procedure is repeated until no more cancer cells are present. You then come back to Dr. Garcia for expert reconstruction either the same or next day.

Eyelid Reconstruction

After treating your eyelid skin cancer, Dr. Garcia will skillfully and artistically reconstruct your eyelid to restore its function, protect your eye, and preserve your vision. Her extensive training and experience as an oculoplastic surgeon allow her to perform the delicate, highly skilled techniques required to remove the cancer and reconstruct the eyelid while delivering the best possible function and aesthetics.

Tired of Acne? Try Forever Clear BBL!

If you’re in search of a solution to combat acne outbreaks, you may want to consider Forever Clear BBL. The innovative technology will treat the root causes of your acne, leaving you with a clear, radiant complexion. Talk to your trusted team at Desert Eyesthetics to determine if Forever Clear BBL is right for you!

What Is Forever Clear BBL and How Does It Work?

Forever Clear BBL is a groundbreaking, non-invasive acne treatment developed by Sciton. The world’s most powerful intense pulsed light (IPL) device delivers energy deep into your skin, clearing acne, triggering skin cell renewal and regeneration, and delivering clear and healthy skin.

Here’s what you can expect with the Forever Clear BBL’s unique three-step program:

  • Step 1: The device’s powerful blue BBL light reaches deep into your pores and eliminates acne-causing bacteria.
  • Step 2: A yellow BBL light reduces inflammation and acne-associated redness, revealing healthy, radiant skin.
  • Step 3: The last step includes treatment with SkinTyte II, which emits infrared light in quick, gentle pulses to trigger the body’s natural healing process.

Why Choose Forever Clear BBL?

Forever Clear BBL is FDA approved to treat acne. The quick, safe, and comfortable treatment eliminates the source of your acne deep within your skin. Men, women, and teens see outstanding results when treating any area of the body where acne appears, typically the face, neck, back, and arms. Not only does Forever Clear BBL clear active acne, but it also reduces future outbreaks. Moreover, the innovative procedure stimulates collagen production, which smooths out acne scars, addresses most common skin concerns, and delivers thicker, tighter, smoother, and more radiant skin!

What Is the Forever Clear BBL Procedure?

BBL Forever Clear is virtually painless and non-invasive, so you shouldn’t require a topical anesthetic. We’ll start by protecting your eyes from the light with dark goggles and placing cold gel on your skin to help conduct the light into your tissues. You may feel a warm, tingling sensation as the light targets the treatment areas. The entire procedure can take as little as 30 minutes, depending on your unique needs.

What Should You Expect After Forever Clear BBL Treatment?

Some patients report mild redness, which typically resolves within a few hours. We recommend that you wear sunscreen and avoid direct sun exposure to protect your treated skin. Dr. Garcia will provide you with aftercare instructions and explain the steps needed for your Forever Clear BBL treatment’s success. Your skin should completely heal about one week after treatment.

What Are the Forever Clear BBL Treatment Results?

While treatment results may vary from person to person, you can expect to see significant improvement after as few as three Forever Clear BBL treatments done every other week. However, the total number of treatments will depend on the treatment location and the severity of your acne outbreaks. Most of our patients experience the best results after a series of 6 treatment sessions.

As your skin begins generating new, healthy collagen, your acne will clear up, and your pores will be smaller and less noticeable. You should see improvement in your overall skin health, quality, and radiance over the next few months as collagen production continues. Dr. Garcia may recommend touch-up Forever Clear BBL treatments and a customized skincare regimen to maintain your stunning results.

Restore Your Youthful Skin with Forever Young BBL

Restore Your Youthful Skin with Forever Young BBL

If you’re in search of a solution to turn back the hands of time and restore your skin’s youthful appearance, you’ve come to the right place. Desert Eyesthetics is proud to introduce Forever Young BBL, the only device shown to alter the expression of genes that are associated with aging, longevity, and increased lifespan. With regular BBL treatments, your skin will look and feel smoother, younger, and clearer than ever!

Forever Young BBL Overview

Throughout history, women and men have searched for anti-aging solutions to achieve younger-looking skin. Contrary to popular belief, even the best creams and lotions can’t penetrate the skin’s surface, meaning they can’t reach the deeper layers where much of the aging process takes place.

Forever Young BBL is a revolutionary treatment that utilizes broadband light (BBL), also known as intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, to address numerous skin concerns. The innovative device sends light energy deep into the skin, which triggers collagen production and restores the skin’s natural beauty. The result? Skin that’s visibly younger-looking year after year!

What Skin Concerns Does Forever Young BBL Address?

Forever Young BBL can treat the skin on most areas of the body, including the face, chest, neck, back of the hands, and shoulders. The treatment is so precise that we can target your fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, and small facial veins. Forever Young BBL also addresses uneven skin tone, texture, and firmness, as well as freckles, vascular lesions, rosacea, telangiectasia (spider veins), and many other skin concerns.

What Sets Forever Young BBL Apart?

A Stanford clinical study between 2004 and 2013 demonstrated that regular treatment with Forever Young BBL had a significant anti-aging effect. Patients received two to four yearly treatments, and at the end of the nine-year study, they didn’t look any older. The study concluded that regular BBL treatments significantly slowed down the skin’s aging process.

A second Stanford study demonstrated that regular, two to four times a year BBL treatments restored the skin’s youthful characteristics and halted further aging. The procedure turned on over 1,900 skin genes that had been turned off due to aging, resulting in increased collagen production and a beautiful, youthful appearance.

How Many Forever Young BBL Treatments Will You Require?

Dr. Garcia will evaluate your needs and develop a fully customized treatment plan to achieve your desired treatment outcomes. Most of our patients require 2-3 corrective Forever Young BBL sessions to clear unwanted pigmentation and redness. To enjoy long-lasting results, we usually recommend three maintenance treatments a year.

Keep in mind that the number of sessions needed and the treatment results may vary from patient to patient.

What Should You Expect with Forever Young BBL?

You’ll wear safety shields or glasses to protect your eyes. Our patients typically don’t require topical anesthetics. During treatment, you may feel a quick, warm sensation as the targeted area absorbs the light. Your procedure may last a few minutes to half an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area.

The Forever Young BBL treatment is gentle, with virtually no downtime, meaning you can resume your daily routine immediately. Some of our patients report redness that usually resolves within a few hours. When treating some pigmented lesions, you may see a darkening of the treatment area followed by fading and flaking. Your treated skin will feel smoother and look clearer and more radiant than ever!

Help Me with My Acne Scarring!

Help Me with My Acne Scarring!

If acne scars are interfering with your appearance and your confidence, your trusted team at Desert Eyesthetics is here to help. We are proud to offer microneedling with the SkinStylus Microsystem and the Halo Hybrid fractional laser to virtually erase your acne scars. Are you ready to enjoy a clear, radiant complexion once again?

Microneedling with the SkinStylus MicroSystem

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a safe and effective treatment option for acne scarring, as well as skin resurfacing, anti-aging, and improving the appearance of surgical scars, stretch marks, burns, and skin damage.

Our SkinStylus MicroSystemworks by creating numerous microchannels in your skin using disposable Biolock needle cartridges. That triggers new collagen production and remodels the treatment area, which safely and effectively tightens and tones your skin and improves the appearance of acne scarring. Mechanically creating microchannels avoids the use of heat, thermal energy, or chemicals, virtually eliminating any post-treatment sensitivity or downtime while achieving spectacular results. Moreover, the skin can absorb more skincare products, which helps provide the necessary nutrients to rapidly improve its appearance.

Real, Long-Lasting Results: Most clients report noticeable results in the appearance of their acne scars after their second treatment session and achieve maximal benefits after 4-6 sessions. You may require 1-2 maintenance treatments per year to continue enjoying a beautiful, clear complexion.

Halo Hybrid Fractional Resurfacing

Halo is the world’s only hybrid laser that produces both ablative and non-ablative wavelengths. Combining those two technologies allows Halo to treat both the epidermis, the outer layer of skin, and the dermis, the skin below. The result? Dramatic reduction in acne scarring and a stunning transformation of the skin’s texture and appearance.

The intense effect of the Halo hybrid laser combined with the motion-tracking technology allows the innovative device to correct discoloration and skin imperfections on those with darker skin tones, something most traditional lasers can’t do.

As a bonus, Halo will dramatically improve the appearance of skin discoloration, sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, and scarring. Help! I Have a Bump on My Eye!

Help! I Have a Bump on My Eye!

Finding eye bumps, the most common of which are called pterygia and pingueculae, can be quite alarming. While most eye bumps are harmless, a visit to Desert Eyesthetics will help safeguard your vision and ensure your eyes maintain their health. You can always count on our team for outstanding, gentle care.

What Is a Pterygium?

A pterygium (plural pterygia) is a wedge-shaped growth of abnormal fleshy conjunctival tissue that forms on the eyeball. Pterygia are benign (non-cancerous) and are relatively harmless. However, they sometimes grow large enough to cover the cornea, which can interfere with your vision.

What Are the Causes of Pterygia?

A pterygium usually develops due to frequent exposure to the sun’s UV rays without the protection of a hat or sunglasses. That is why this type of growth is sometimes referred to as a surfer’s eye.

What Are the Symptoms of Pterygia?

Symptoms of a pterygium may include irritation, itchiness, redness, or burning. If left untreated, a pterygium can potentially distort the shape of the cornea, resulting in blurriness or loss of vision.

How Is a Pterygium Treated?

Most people will find that eye drops or ointments provide the needed relief. However, if the problem does not resolve or begins to affect your vision, we will likely recommend surgical removal using a relatively simple and low-risk procedure. Recurrence of a pterygium is possible. However, new oculoplastic surgical techniques reduce the likelihood of recurrence and shorten the recovery time, with the eye regaining its normal appearance in just a few short weeks.

What Is a Pinguecula?

A pinguecula (plural pingueculae) is a yellowish, raised non-cancerous growth on the conjunctiva, which is the mucous membrane that covers the front part of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelids. This type of bump usually develops on the side of the eye near the nose but can also grow on the other side.

What Are the Causes of Pingueculae?

The most common cause of a pinguecula appearing is frequent exposure to the sun, dust, and wind without protection. The condition is more prevalent in middle-aged and older people but can also develop in younger adults and children.

What Are the Symptoms of Pingueculae?

A pinguecula doesn’t usually cause any symptoms. However, if it prevents the tears from covering the entire area, a condition known as dry eye can develop, resulting in stinging, itching, and the feeling of a foreign object in the eye. In rare instances, a pinguecula can cause extra blood vessels to cover the eyeball, resulting in red, swollen, and inflamed eyes.

How is a Pinguecula Treated?

Most pingueculae are asymptomatic and require no treatment. However, at times they can interfere with wearing contact lenses or cause discomfort when blinking. A pinguecula can also be a cosmetic concern. In any of these cases, Dr. Garcia, our acclaimed oculoplastic surgeon, will remove your eye growth in a procedure similar to pterygium surgery, with excellent results and a short recovery period.

How Can You Prevent Eyelid Bumps?

Both pinguecula and pterygium usually result from exposure to wind, dust, and ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun. The best way to prevent these eye bumps from developing, especially if you’ve had them before, is wearing sunglasses when in the sun, wearing goggles to protect your eyes when in the wind or around dust, and using artificial tears when your eyes are dry.

5 Things You Need to Know About The Halo Hybrid Fractional Laser

5 Things You Need to Know About The Halo Hybrid Fractional Laser

As the years go by, the natural aging process and repeated sun exposure can take a toll on the skin. Fine lines, wrinkles, and sunspots often begin making an unwelcome appearance, and that natural, healthy glow starts fading away. The good news is that Halo’s groundbreaking technology offered by your trusted team at Desert Eyesthetics virtually erases years of damage and restores your skin’s youthful radiance!

Here are five things you need to know about the Halo hybrid fractional laser:

#1 How the Halo Hybrid Fractional Laser Works

The Halo hybrid fractional laser delivers energy using fractionated beams that generate heat deep within your skin cells. The heat stimulates the body’s natural healing process, which encourages the growth of healthy, new skin cells to replace the old, damaged ones. The result? Beautiful, healthy, and glowing skin!

The Halo laser allows our clinician to customize your treatment to fit your lifestyle and precisely target your unique skin condition. Need to be back at work the next day? A light treatment will deliver smooth and vibrant skin without downtime. Want “wow” results? A more intense treatment protocol will leave you with stunning results with just a few days of downtime.

#2 The Conditions Halo Hybrid Fractional Laser Improves

Halo targets years of skin damage with precision. It significantly improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, skin discoloration, sun damage, enlarged pores, and scars and evens out the skin’s tone and texture. The complete rejuvenation treatment increases the skin’s reflectivity and glow, leaving you with dramatic results!

#3 What to Expect During Treatment

We will apply a topical anesthetic to your skin thirty minutes to an hour before your transformative treatment for your comfort. Halo’s motion tracking technology will measure the treatment area. Our clinician will move the Halo handpiece over each target section of your skin until the system recognizes that the procedure is done.

The topical anesthetic and Halo’s integrated cooling technology will leave you with minimal pain or discomfort. Most of our patients describe a mild sensation of heat with occasional prickling but are comfortable throughout treatment. Some continue to feel warm for about 15 to 30 minutes after the procedure or a little longer with more in-depth treatments.

#4 What to Expect After Treatment?

We will provide you with care instructions for the first 72 hours after treatment. After two to three days, you will notice a light bronzing appearance, and by day three or four, your skin will peel and reveal a new, healthy and glowing complexion.

#5 The Expected Results

Halo is a complete skin resurfacing and rejuvenation treatment. You will see the initial results two to five days after treatment, with the most significant improvement in your skin’s tone, texture, and health taking place in the first two to three weeks. A dermal regeneration phase will follow, with continued anti-aging benefits for months. The Halo treatment results will last for years to come. Make sure to protect your new, healthy skin by using UV sunscreen at all times.

Common Aging Changes of the Eyelids: What You Can Do

Common Aging Changes of the Eyelids: What You Can Do

As the years go by, natural eyelid changes can leave you looking tired and sleepy and may even interfere with your vision. Desert Eyesthetics is proud to offer a range of procedures to turn back the hands of time and restore your eyelids’ function and aesthetics. Dr. Garcia, our board-certified and highly skilled Oculofacial Plastic Surgeon, utilizes groundbreaking surgical techniques to deliver stunning transformations. You’ll love your new youthful and rejuvenated appearance.

Ectropion: Eyelids That Sag and Turn Outward

Ectropion is a condition that most commonly occurs due to aging as the eyelid tissues and tendons become stretched out. Other causes include facial paralysis, trauma, eyelid growths, and previous eyelid surgeries.

Ectropion is characterized by eyelids that sag and turn outward and usually affects only the lower lid. The out-turning causes a gap between the eyelid and the eyeball, leaving the inner lid surface exposed and prone to irritation. That often leads to excessive dryness, tearing, crusting, and sensitivity to light. With time, the eyelid may turn red and thicken.

How Is Ectropion Corrected?

After determining the cause and the condition of the eyelid tissues, we will perform ectropion surgery as an outpatient procedure under local anesthetic and light IV sedation, if needed. Following surgery, you may experience minimal discomfort and some swelling and bruising, which should resolve within two weeks, after which you can resume your normal activities.

Entropion: Eyelids That Turn Inward

Entropion most commonly occurs due to aging as the eyelid tissues and tendons become stretched out. Other causes of this condition include trauma or scarring.

Entropion generally affects the lower eyelids and is characterized by lids turning inward, resulting in the eyelashes scratching the eye surfaces and causing eye pain, irritation, excessive tearing, redness, and light sensitivity. If not untreated, entropion can lead to vision loss and may permanently damage the cornea.

How Is Entropion Corrected?

At Desert Eyesthetics, we offer surgery as a long-term solution to reattach the loose muscle and tighten the eyelid tendon. We typically perform the outpatient procedure under local anesthetic and offer light IV sedation, if needed. Following surgery, you may experience minimal discomfort and some swelling and bruising, which should resolve within two weeks.

Dermatochalasis: Droopy Eyelids

Dermatochalasis is a common condition for people over age 50 and usually results from reduced skin elasticity, weak connective tissue, smoking, congenital illnesses, or thyroid problems, and is sometimes hereditary.

Dermatochalasis is characterized by excess upper or lower eyelids skin or droopy eyelids, often resulting in a tired or sad appearance. The condition may affect one or both eyes and may result in impaired peripheral vision, an aching brow, or heaviness of the eyelid.

How Is Dermatochalasis Corrected?

An eyelid lift or blepharoplasty will improve your peripheral vision and restore your youthful eyelids. We typically perform the outpatient procedure under local anesthetic and offer light IV sedation, if needed. Following surgery, you may experience minimal discomfort and some swelling and bruising, which should resolve within two weeks.

Blepharoptosis (Ptosis): Droopy Upper Eyelid

Ptosis, short for blepharoptosis, is most commonly seen in elderly patients. It typically results from the deterioration or paralysis of the muscles that raise the upper eyelids. Causes of ptosis include nerve abnormalities, trauma, infections, and congenital disorders, and in some cases, the use of contact lenses for long periods.

Blepharoptosis is characterized by heavy eyelids that are hard to keep open.  This often leads to eye fatigue and headaches from chronically using the forehead muscles to lift the brows and eyelids.  Ptosis can affect one or both eyes.

How Is Blepharoptosis Corrected?

Blepharoptosis treatment will depend on the severity of the droop, whether one or both eyes are affected, and the strength of your lifting muscles. Our goal for surgery is to tighten the natural lifting muscles. However, if they are too weak, we may bypass them with artificial material. If the eyelid has excessive skin, a blepharoplasty may also be required. We typically perform blepharoptosis treatment under local anesthetic and offer light IV sedation, if needed. Following surgery, you may experience minimal discomfort and some swelling and bruising, which should resolve within two weeks.
